What You’ll Need
In addition to the Playstation 3 gaming system and audio receiver, which you probably already have since you are reading this article, you will need an optical digital cable. The optical digital cable can be used for both the Playstation 3 gaming system and the Playstation 2 gaming system.
Unpacking the Optical Digital Cable
The optical digital cable is packaged in the standard packaging that generally hangs from a peg on a store’s pegboard. It will be assumed you are fully aware of how to initially open this type packaging since most electronic cables are packaged in this manner. There is one aspect of the packaging that you may not know. The gold tips of the cable itself are covered by protective plastic coverings. The protective coverings are quite difficult to remove. It can be assumed these protective coverings are part of the cable. This is not the case. Carefully removing the plastic coverings with your fingernail is the most desirable method. If your fingernails aren’t long enough, you can gently squeeze the coverings until they are free. If you use the fingernail method, be careful as these tiny coverings will fly.
Insertion
Plug one end of the cable into the optical in port on the back of your Playstation 3 gaming system. Plug the other end of the cable into the optical out port on the back of your audio receiver. The ends of the cable have a specific way they will plug into these ports. If the ends are inserted correctly, the ends will easily plug into each port. The HDMI cable will still go from the gaming system to the television set.
Getting PS3 Sound from the Audio Receiver
Once the Playstation 3 gaming system is correctly connected to your audio receiver, you will need to make an adjustment to the settings of your Playstation 3 gaming system. Turn on your gaming system and log in with your username (if there is more than one user for the gaming system). Go into the gaming system’s settings menu and scroll to Sound Settings. Press the X button to access your options. Select the Audio Output Settings by pressing the X button.
You will select “Optical Digital” as your connector. Press the right arrow button to move to the next screen. You will then select the output format for your specific audio receiver. There will be multiple formats already selected. Do not change these. Add the format for your receiver to this list. The optical digital cable will let the PS3 know if your receiver supports five or seven (or more) speakers. The right arrow button will move you to the last screen which verifies the settings you have entered. If these settings are correct, press the X button to save these settings. You should now have stereo sound for anything you do with your Playstation 3 gaming system.
Works with Any Brand Receiver
This will work with any brand of audio receiver. You’ll need to set your television to use the external audio system to hear the Playstation 3 gaming system. The HDMI cables won’t necessarily give you Playstation 3 audio.
